Therefore, leaders must define and adapt their leadership style to fit their team’s specific needs and characteristics.
Leadership style refers to a leader’s approach when directing, motivating, and managing their team. There are various leadership styles, including autocratic, democratic, transformational, and laissez-faire. The authoritarian style includes making all decisions without consulting the team. In contrast, the democratic technique consists in involving the team in decision-making. The transformational style inspires and motivates the team to achieve common goals. In contrast, the laissez-faire style gives the team more decision-making independence.
To define and adapt your leadership style, you must first understand your personality, strengths, and weaknesses. According to the Harvard Business Review, self-awareness is critical for effective leadership. You must know your values, beliefs, and behavioral tendencies to understand how you interact with your team. For example, suppose you are an introverted person. In that case, you may be more comfortable with a hands-off approach, while if you are an extroverted person, you may prefer a more hands-on approach.
Once you have an understanding of your personality, you need to evaluate the needs of your team. For example, if the goal is to increase productivity and efficiency, a more structured approach may be necessary. Alternatively, if the goal is to encourage innovation and creativity, a more flexible and hands-off approach may be required.
Another critical factor to consider when defining and adapting your leadership style is the type of project or task you are working on. As noted by Fast Company, different projects may require different leadership styles. For instance, a project requiring quick decision-making may require an autocratic leadership style. In contrast, a project that requires collaboration and creativity may require a more democratic approach.
